some precautions for debate:-
I don't know whether you are for or against the topic but while putting your points stick to your side & use the provided time wisely.Rather than talking unnecessary things put forward your points & give examples where it is necessary.(if possible put examples of daily life & the things which are around us).Be precise & clear abt. your thoughts. best of luck....

In agriculture GM animals are being developed primarily to produce disease resistant animals,produce desirable alterations to growth rates or feed conversion efficiency, make leaner meat, and enhance anti-microbial properties of milk for newborn animals. GM insects that carry human disease can be created so that they are incapable of transmitting the disease. Replacement of the wild population with such strains could reduce or eliminate disease transmission. Medical research creating GM animals to
understand gene function.Genetic modification of several species is proving
particularly useful in enhancing the basic understanding of developmental biology, the study of how a single fertilised egg develops into a fully- formed adult.The main application of GM animals to toxicity testing at the moment is in the testing of chemicals and drugs to ensure that they do not cause cancer,
The aims in farm animal transgenesis are to introduce genes that confer disease resistance to animal pathogens, eg, development of trypanosomiasis or foot and mouth disease-resistant cattle; to enhance resistance to parasitism; to make desirable alterations to growth rates or feed conversion efficiency; and to alter meat and milk composition to produce either leaner meat or enhanced anti-microbial properties of milk for newborn animals. One of the earliest genetic modifications of larger animals was the development of GM pigs carrying a human gene that could prevent the acute rejection
of organs transplanted between pigs and humans.A major goal of research using GM insects that are agricultural pests is to develop new strategies for
controlling the numbers of individuals in a pest population.

GM Products: Benefits and Controversies

Benefits

* Crops
o Enhanced taste and quality
o Reduced maturation time
o Increased nutrients, yields, and stress tolerance
o Improved resistance to disease, pests, and herbicides
o New products and growing techniques
* Animals
o Increased resistance, productivity, hardiness, and feed efficiency
o Better yields of meat, eggs, and milk
o Improved animal health and diagnostic methods
* Environment
o "Friendly" bioherbicides and bioinsecticides
o Conservation of soil, water, and energy
o Bioprocessing for forestry products
o Better natural waste management
o More efficient processing
* Society
o Increased food security for growing populations

Controversies

* Safety
o Potential human health impacts, including allergens, transfer of antibiotic resistance markers, unknown effects
o Potential environmental impacts, including: unintended transfer of transgenes through cross-pollination, unknown effects on other organisms (e.g., soil microbes), and loss of flora and fauna biodiversity
* Access and Intellectual Property
o Domination of world food production by a few companies
o Increasing dependence on industrialized nations by developing countries
o Biopiracy, or foreign exploitation of natural resources
* Ethics
o Violation of natural organisms' intrinsic values
o Tampering with nature by mixing genes among species
o Objections to consuming animal genes in plants and vice versa
o Stress for animal
* Labeling
o Not mandatory in some countries (e.g., United States)
o Mixing GM crops with non-GM products confounds labeling attempts
* Society
o New advances may be skewed to interests of rich countries

Application of genetic modification technology to
animals can be used in medical research to create
models of human disease. Such models help
elucidate disease pathways and allow assessment of
new therapies.To understand disease processes, researchers need
access to affected tissues and cells at all stages of the
disease. Tissue culture systems in which cells are
grown in incubators have been extremely important
in understanding disease processes, but the methods
for growing cells from many tissues remain to be
developed.

good morning shraddha,
GMO technology could be very useful for removal of contaminants.
some of other benefits of gmo

* new species of fruit or vegetable that people want to grow
* species that are biological control agents
* animals kept in zoos or circuses.

GMO technology is patent-protected food crops which are resistant to commercial herbicides or are able to produce pesticidal proteins from within the plant, or stacked trait seeds, which do both.
So there are lots of advantages of GMO technology..

But as i have previously mentioned that there is no 100% advantage or disadvantage of any- thing.The well known example is around us only.U can easily see the difference between a desi-tomato & a hybrid one.The hybrid is only bigger in only size but have no nutricial value & of-course no taste.

Also, the seeds,pesticides & especially fertilizers which claim at improving the efficiency of land provide good & healthy crop for 2 to 3 years & then they start showing there ill effects .one of the biggest ill effect is that the land becomes completely barren & is of no use for future purpose.so definitely proper research & exp. are required in this area.

well iam getting drowsy right now so i will write other things tommorow.Good night & get prepared for the debate in your dreams....

Varnish Alternative Derived from Glycerin

Varnish Alternative Derived from Glycerin
German researchers have developed a varnish alternative in which the majority of petrochemical components have been substituted by vegetable oils and sugars. It has identical properties to the conventional varnishes used today and is hard-wearing, scratch-proof and resistant to chemical attack.

The new varnish is based on the chemical compound 1,3-propandiol, which is derived from glycerin. Glycerin in turn is the basic substance found in all vegetable… Continue

SOLAR ENERGY

Hi to all ECOFRIENDS
I want to know about SOLAR CAR.
What is prise of solar that car? So if possible ican buy it able to reduce th air polution
to some extent.

Exhibit of wild animals in Advertisements

In India many advertisers use wild animals on national TV to enthuse the audience. Is it not a crime? The use of animal gives a wrong signal to the viewers who consider animals to be for the entertainment of the masses. Already we are seeing a uncontrollable perilous environmental degradation from all quarters. Is it not high time that the govt curb the usage of animals in advt.

my son's interest in environment

It is very heartening to see enthusiastic parents like you who want to imbibe love for nature in their child.
As a child I think Salman can learn about the flora and fauna ( avian ) in and around his environment and in out country.
Once he starts learning, he will start appreciating the beauty of nature. As he grows old he will understand the environmental degradation caused by the greed of humans. Hopefully he will guide other youngsters to appreciate the beauty of nature.

The need of the hour…

my son's interest in environment

Dear Sir,

Reference my earlier email, sir i am once again requesting regarding salman's involvement in some or the other environment friendly group near talegaon dabhade. As an as he is learning new things in school regarding polution in air, water, destroying of trees etc he is getting emotional towards mother earth and wants to do some thing for it. Pls help as i want him to choose the right path from now onwards.

Rgds,

Shabana
