I it delightful to see people concerned about water conservation. I would like to take the attention of the group to the following:

India receives average annual rainfall of about 4000 BCM (billion cubic meter) which can be divided into (a) surface water & (b) ground water. The surface water (rivers, lakes, ponds, reservoirs and other water bodies) constitutes a major part of water resources in India. The rain water harvesting augments the ground water table and lot of steps have been taken to implement the system, at least in urban areas.

However, it is important to know that India has vast areas that is "flood prone" and on the other side it has an equal area which is "drought prone". A situation where it has "surplus" as well as "scarce" resource at a certain distance. It was envisaged long ago to bring surplus water to scarce districts by "Inter Basin Water Transfer" and "Interlinking of Rivers" to bring a balance in availability of water.
A autonomous body was formed for its implementation i.e. National Water Development Agency (www.nwda.gov.in). Due to bureaucratic problems, the plans have been on paper for over 2 decades. If the plans would have been implemented, our country would have benefited immensely and in the process, it would have generated about 30,000 MW of power.

I would request all to check the web-site and if possible, pursue the course of action through RTI Act. The implementation of plans have been hanging around for 2 decades because of red tapism of central govt and state governments.

Get lot of statistics about water from:

Hello Sandeep, you are talking about “Interlinking of river”. Yes it might be a solution for water scarcity in some area. But it is a large scaled planning which cannot be implemented without govt. initiative.
But till then we should be careful for using water in our daily life. For save this precious natural resource I think rain water harvesting system is a better way.

Hello Sidhant and Satya Prakash, if we check our daily water consumption, we can see that in toilet flushing our water consumption is about 39%. It is maximum of our daily water consumption. We can save about 14 lts of water by using new type toilet flush. Our old type flush uses about 20 lts of water whereas the water consumption of new type flush is only 6 lts.
Please use the discussion page for discuss about any point concerning water conservation. It would be useful for all “Precious water group” visitors. Thanks.

Also for those who have an old flush system.

Put a one litre bottle of water in the tank. You will save 1 litre each time you flush.

Another way is to fill a bucket with water and use a mug to flush when a full flush is not needed.

Fresh water is available from only one source, that is rain. Even ground water refilling is done from the same source and acts as a type of storage capacity for use when the rain or sufficient source of surface water is not available. Use of 0ceanic water is costly and can be limited to coastal areas or smaller countries near the coast line. Therefore, there is no way other than rain water harvesting for people living in main land areas. It is attractive even for those near the coasts. In fact it should be called water harvesting only. The roof water harvesting like everything in this world is to provide an opportunity to individuals to act in favour of water collection and storage. But it should be remembered at the same time that it is advocated also as a big business. The RWH for individual houses need additional input in the form of money. The community storage systems, as advocated by modern day experts, are to have polythene lining in the bottom of the storage pond so that the loss due to seepage is controlleded and water is not lost to the ground. It is also required to be covered from the top so that the loss due to vaporisation is minimal. These are unscientific, uneconomic and unnatural methods of water harvesting/ collection.

Therefore, the simpler and conventional techniques of water harvesting as done in Sukho Majri or by Rajendra Singh's co-op in the desert areas of Rajasthan is a very good example of community water harvesting in ponds, lakes or artificially created Pain, Johad, Ahra etc. it attracts every member of the society to contriibute, to utilise in a proprtionate manner and be a part of social structure.

Whatever is said or done, water is a precious item on which depends the survival of life on this planet. Indian Chandrayaan, and Nasa's satellites are just looking for Air and water on Moon, Mars and other planets. We must harvest water and use it with better understanding of its relationship with and need for humans and other lives on Earth.

Sweet Plant - Stevia

There's a new kid on the block (well, kind-of new to some of us anyway) ... stevia. This intriguing sweetener is ages old in some parts of the world – mostly South America and China, but relatively new in the U.S. It has no calories, no nothing that can harm you, even if you have diabetes. It is not processed like high-fructose corn syrup or agave nectar, and the final sweetener is totally unharmed in the extracting process.

It is made from a shrub that is relatively easy to grow – that grew to…
