Earth Matters

Save mother earth!

yesterday when i was walking to my friends place, i saw this guy burning a huge heap of paper that his office had chucked out. i stopped to tell him that how its creating pollution and that he should ask his seniors to send used paper for recycling instead of burning it. the man just took no notice and walked away with ignorance. i felt so angry that i wanted to douse the fire myself (only if i had buckets of water around me).
as i left that place my anger towards the man kept increasing. but i realised that he is probably doing so, as hes not aware as to what effects it has. the point is to make people aware. so im just writing to all, hoping that you as an individual will try to make people aware about our environment as much as possible. dont preach, but make these people understand, that how it will effect them negetively in future. if you see someone throwing plastic on the road or burn dried leaves or paper, please step ahead and tell them to dispose them off in a recycling bin or resuse. dried leaves can be used as a compost. to find out how, you can contact toxic link on 91-11-24328006, 24320711 or email at tldelhi@toxicslink.org

glad that you stopped and spoke to him..maybe next time he'll think about what you said..and try and find a better way of disposing it. I believe there are agencies that collect office waste for recycling.. will try and find out where they are

Also composting is a very effective way of dealing with organic waste. There are parks and local gardens that have set up compost pits for the leaves that fall and all the garden waste that is generated. So instead od burning it..it all goes into the pit.. decomposes and then is reused as compost!

check this iste for more information on how you can do composting in your own home or even a flat on the 14th floor!

Goonj is a non profit based in New Delhi. They have been working in partnership with corporates and offices to collect and send their office paper waste (usually one side used sheets) to them. this is then cut and bound into notebooks that are then distributed free of cost to schools and children.

they also collect clothes, books, stationary, utensils etc. which are all either recycled or reused in rural and urban areas.

goonj has more than 600 collection centers all over India. you can visit their site for specific locations.

convincing corporates to do that could be one of the petitions and campaign that we could start under the umbrella of earth matters foundation.

at the individual level we can make sure we reuse paper wherever possible.

we could:
write behind envelopes
buy local produce with less packaging
get bank statements and phone bills by email wherever possible
print only when absolutely necessary
make notebooks out of one side used paper for office work
buy second hand books.

See the article published in January 2008 issue of National Geographic on "high-tech trash". The link is here: http://ngm.nationalgeographic.com/2008/01/high-tech-trash/recycling...

Shockingly, this article shows a photo from a New Delhi suburb, where a man is seen extracting lead from used circuit boards, using a pan which he also uses for his family cooking!

Unfortunately with so much of industrialization, India still don't have strict rules on recycling.

Sweet Plant - Stevia

There's a new kid on the block (well, kind-of new to some of us anyway) ... stevia. This intriguing sweetener is ages old in some parts of the world – mostly South America and China, but relatively new in the U.S. It has no calories, no nothing that can harm you, even if you have diabetes. It is not processed like high-fructose corn syrup or agave nectar, and the final sweetener is totally unharmed in the extracting process.

It is made from a shrub that is relatively easy to grow – that grew to…
